Why not an inventory management system?

An Inventory management system is focused just on the direct management of items for inventory.  A typical Inventory management system will perform basic inventory control, receiving and shipping functions at individual item levels. These solutions are normally applications, which perform specific functions and offer little or no integration with other systems. On the other hand WMS builds upon the basic inventory management functions of an Inventory Management System to include all of the operational requirements of a warehouse.

Case Study

Warehouse management system implemented at a consumer goods distributor's Warehouse

The solution is provided to a leading distributor of branded consumer goods in the New York’s New Jersey area. The company is running a 100,000 sq.ft. warehouse in NJ from where daily deliveries are carried-out to the Tri-State area. The distributor is also selling Truckloads nationwide. Some of the products purchased require to be repacked to fit local/nationwide demands.

The Challenge

Like all other companies in this sector, the distributor too implemented an accounting package many years ago, from where the inventory management was being controlled. After moving to a new 100,000 sq.ft. warehouse they found it very difficult to keep an accurate inventory. Orders started to be short-shipped and a tremendous amount of over-time was added to the warehouse staff to cater the hike in orders. The warehouse people used picking tickets printed from the accounting package, which was not able to provide accurate picking location and real time data. The company recognized the direct impact of this inefficient business process on sales, customer service and productivity. The company decided to invest and improve their warehouse management by introducing our WMS.

The Solution

Our WMS cell provided the distributor with a real-time inventory and order processing system. Sales people started observing real time inventory and orders were entered and approved based on availability. The warehouse staff started using wireless handheld devices for pinpointing the picking and receiving locations as well as for keeping an accurate record of the items and quantities involved in each and every ‘pick & receive’. The system was clever enough to suggest receiving locations as well as picking locations based on ‘best picking/receiving route’. This reduced drastically the picking time per order. Pickers started scanning each case that was picked, which provided the warehouse manager with a real time productivity of the pickers as well as a tool to track the workload at any given point of time. The system was completely integrated with the accounting package previously installed. That way the accounting department was able to continue to use their existing system with their custom reports.

The benefit

The distributor improved business processes and enhanced productivity for a more efficient warehouse management system, which led to cost savings in the supply chain. The sales managers of the company now focus on sales, considerably improving customer service. Warehouse controllers address more inventory management concerns and are practically worry-free regarding the accuracy of data and physical stock. Additionally, more accurate order information captured by the workers enables the company to effectively plan the delivery routes to the customers, thereby reducing transportation costs.
